Part time Secondary QTS

From September 2026 we will running a part time route into teaching for a number of secondary subject areas. We have a small group of local partnership schools in the Christchurch and New Forest area who are keen to support people wishing to train on this pathway.

This course will last for 16 months, finishing at the end of the autumn term in the following year.

Placement 1 runs from September to July and takes place Wednesday to Friday. During the first term, trainees are in school on Wednesdays and Thursdays, with Fridays reserved for pedagogical study (either undertaken at the training hub in Christchurch or independently). After Christmas, the timetable increases, with trainees attending school on alternate Fridays as well. In addition, there are Subject Specialist Sessions which run on Wednesday afternoons at a local school where your Lead Subject Tutor teaches.

Placement 2 begins in September of the following academic year. During this placement, trainees are mainly based in school in order to meet the expected requirement of teaching an 80% timetable.

We arrange both placements for you, ensuring they are in two contrasting schools.

Placements start with observations. As the course progresses you will have more responsibility for planning and teaching longer sequences of lessons, whilst continuing to be supported by your mentor and other colleagues. You learn to deliver clear instructions to support learning, model best practice, as well as learning to provide feedback to students in a variety of ways. You will receive regular feedback on the lessons you teach.

In addition, you will develop an understanding of the wider professional responsibilities and relationships that teachers have. This involves working with a tutor group, potentially supporting them with assemblies and sporting competitions. As well as taking part in parents’ evenings, open evenings, helping on trips, attending department and staff meetings, delivering PSHE, and contributing to professional themes sessions with the other trainees in the school. During this time, you will be collecting evidence in support of you gaining QTS.

Trainees have a subject mentor at their placement school and also a Professional Tutor who supports all trainees in the school.
